MINNEAPOLIS — Northern Minnesotans won three medals at the girls state swimming and diving meet Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 13-15, in Minneapolis.
The two student-athletes who won them are the same two who set new section records on their way to state.
Park Rapids junior Avery Schueller finished third in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle, and Two Harbors senior Bella Imholte took seventh in the 200 freestyle.
Only the top eight earn medals at the state meet. But Imholte also won the consolation final in the 100 backstroke, and Schueller and the rest of the Park Rapids 200 freestyle relay team also finished ninth.
Five more relays raced in the consolation finals: the Brainerd 200 freestyle finished 10th and the 400 freestyle finished 11th, the Bemidji 200 freestyle finished 13th and the Rock Ridge 200 freestyle finished 15th and the 400 freestyle 16th.
Brainerd senior Avery Duerr was part of both relay teams and also finished 11th in the 100 breaststroke. Also finishing 11th were Detroit Lakes freshman Grace Hamm in the 100 butterfly and Hibbing senior Raini Gibson in the 50 freestyle. Gibson also raced in the 100 butterfly consolation finals, ending up 14th.
Brainerd eighth grader Blair Ahlquist was the only Northland diver to advance to the finals, where she placed 13th. Two others competed in the semifinals, both from Park Rapids: senior Grace Officer (18th) and sophomore Karlee Rowland (20th).
