Woman dies while in custody at Itasca County Jail

The Itasca County Sheriff's Office said the death appears to be a result of natural causes. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.

GRAND RAPIDS — A woman died in custody at the Itasca County Jail in the early hours of Friday, Aug. 28.

The death appears to be from natural causes, according to a news release from the Itasca County Sheriff's Office.

The woman was found unresponsive around 2 a.m., and emergency medical assistance was provided, but the woman was pronounced dead, the release stated.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident, including the official cause and manner of death.

The identity of the woman has not been released as of Friday afternoon and is pending notification of next of kin.
