Helping others is a good thing, and feels even better when it makes you feel good, too.
"I always like to say we're helping people," said Brittany Thoms, program coordinator with Lutheran Social Service. "But in reality, our volunteers are feeling that fulfillment themselves."
Thoms was a recent guest on Bright Spot on the KAXE Morning Show, and the conversation focused on the organization's Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs.
Both programs are open to volunteers ages 55 and older. Foster grandparents spend time in classrooms to help with reading and math when needed, or just to be somebody for kids to talk to. Senior companions spend time with an older adult and offer friendship, support and transportation when requested.
"Whatever you guys are interested in together, go for it!" Thoms said.
There is a tax-free stipend of $4 an hour for those who volunteer at least 10 hours per week. Mileage reimbursement is also offered.
Lutheran Social Service started in 1865 near Red Wing, by serving just four children. Since then, it has expanded across Minnesota and North Dakota to provide a range of services aimed at fulfilling its mission of inspiring hope, changing lives and building community.
"Our goal is to meet our neighbors where they are and help them remove some of those barriers, so they can live full and abundant lives," Thoms said.
