GRAND RAPIDS — Spring is here!
Along with the chorus of frogs and birds, flowers are emerging in yards, on porches and in public spaces.
The Grand Rapids Garden Club plays a big role in helping the town look beautiful as spring rolls into summer.
Club members Roberta Zimmerman and Adele Hougland were recent Bright Spot guests on the KAXE Morning Show. The club brightens up Grand Rapids, with flowers at the Grand Rapids Area Library and Itasca County Judicial Center. They also plant marigolds each year with area first graders.
"They can't believe a plant comes out of a little tiny seed," Zimmerman said.
She said it amazes her, too. "You get a whole plant out of that little tiny structure. When you think of all the genetic materials in there and enough food to get it started ... I'm still excited about that!"
This year, the club will host the spring meeting of the 8th District Minnesota State Horticultural Society, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16, at United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids.
The day features a rummage sale-like country store, lunch, silent auctions and more. At 1 p.m., plant researcher Matt Clark will give a talk called "Grapes, Berries and Apples: Minnesota's Fruit Revolution."
The cost to attend is $26 per person, and registration is due by May 11. To register, email grandgardenclub@gmail.com, or call Jim Pederson at 218-326-4925.
