Pequot Lakes School District

Four speakers from three rural Northern Minnesota school districts took first at the state Speech meet last weekend, and 14 more finished in the top eight.

The region will be well represented in the Class A meet, with 69 entries; Northern Minnesota has five entries in the 2A meet.

Known as Worlds, the robotics competition in Houston will have 600 teams, including those from Pequot Lakes, Northeast Range/Ely and Warroad.

The district succeeded in its second attempt to pass building bonds and a capital project levy to renovate and expand its schools and pay for textbooks and technology.

Minnesotans are voting for Itasca County Board, Two Harbors City Council, Rock Ridge School Board and referendums in the Pequot Lakes, Pine River-Backus and Nevis school districts.

Three of the top four Class A teams were from Northern Minnesota in the 2025 boys basketball state tournament.

Cherry, Red Lake County, Nevis and Pequot Lakes will compete in the Minnesota State High School League tournament, the last of the winter sports season.

Pequot Lakes, Pine River-Backus and Nevis are all posing ballot questions to voters and aim to upgrade or expand school facilities.

East Grand Forks and Northern Lakes will face off in the quarterfinals. The winner will most likely play Hibbing/Chisholm in the semifinals.

After a failed referendum vote in November 2023, Pequot Lakes School Board members are planning four sessions to gather public feedback for future decision-making.
