VIRGINIA — The defending 2A state champions in girls tennis are favored to repeat in the Twin Cities next week, Oct. 27-28.
Rock Ridge swept Section 7, winning the team title and filling all four state slots for the individual tourney.
Senior Mayme Scott earned the No. 4 seed, and freshman Ellie Dimberio will look for an upset in the first round to improve on last year's consolation championship.
Sophomore Alice Johnson and senior Kiri Milos also earned the No. 4 seed in doubles, and last year's consolation runners-up Nina Paulsen and Emmi Peterson will compete in their final state tournament.
The Wolverines will take on Northfield at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Bloomington.
Thief River Falls and Pequot Lakes will compete in the 1A tournament Tuesday afternoon in Minneapolis. Both teams are unranked.
The Prowlers finished fifth in the team tourney a year ago, and the Patriots are competing for the first time since 2019.
Pequot senior Claire Oseland and junior Emme Sullivan also qualified for the singles tournament. As did Crookston freshman Lauren Tull and Staples-Motley senior Ronnie Noska.
Noska earned the No. 3 seed in her fifth and final state tournament.
The Cardinals are also sending the duos of sisters senior Madison Perius and sophomore Kaylee Perius and juniors Natalie Hanson and Sarah Kroll.
The individual tournament begins Thursday, Oct. 29, with championships on Friday.
The championship matches will be streamed on NPSN; a subscription is needed to watch.
