Red Lake Falls softball team takes 4th in state tournament

Six rural Northland teams competed in state softball tournament in Mankato on June 2-5, 2026. The Barnum girls were consolation runners-up.

MANKATO — Red Lake Falls claimed fourth place in the Class A state softball tournament on Thursday, June 4.

Red Lake Falls started their run by beating New York Mills 5-0 on Tuesday. They lost 4-0 on Wednesday to West Lutheran.

In the third place game Thursday afternoon, the Eagles fell to BOLD. Red Lake Falls scored first, with a run in the fourth inning. BOLD responded with a run of their own in the fifth, sending the game to extra innings. The eighth inning held most of the action, with BOLD scoring nine runs to win the game.

Northland teams Sebeka and Barnum also competed in the Class A tournament. Both lost in the first round. The No. 3 seed Barnum won their second game 5-0 against New York Mills to advance to the consolation championship on Thursday, ultimately falling to Southland.

Southland was the first to score, with two runs in the top of the first inning. Barnum tied the game with a runs by Makenna Ziesmer and Lyla Oetterer in the first and second innings. Southland scored the final run of the game in the third inning, taking the lead 3-2.

Esko (Class 2A) and Brainerd (Class 4A) exited the tournament after losing their first two games. Both teams competed in the state tournament last year and came into the tournament this year the lowest-seeded teams in their bracket.

In Class 3A, Rock Ridge was also eliminated after losing their first two games. The Wolverines came into their first state tournament in program history seeded No. 4.

The tournament took place June 2-5.
