Superior National Forest plans 18 prescribed burns this spring

The fires will help reduce overgrown vegetation and protect local communities from wildfires.

DULUTH — The Superior National Forest will begin prescribed fires this month.

Fire operations will continue through June, as weather conditions allow, the forest said in a news release Tuesday, April 7.

The fires will help reduce overgrown vegetation and protect local communities and natural resources from wildfires.

Fires planned for the east side of the forest include:

  • Fiddle Creek, 695 acres, 13 miles up the Gunflint Trail, 5 miles west of South Brule Road in Cook County
  • Hungry, 81 acres, 1 mile northwest of Devils Track Campground off Cook County Road 8/Devils Track Road
  • Sunfish Lake, 775 acres, south of Greenwood Lake off the Gunflint Trail
  • Kawishiwi Lakes, 1,911 acres, 18 miles north of Tofte at the intersection of Sawbill Trail and Perent Lake Road
  • Shack Units and Elixir, 142 acres, 8 miles northeast of Isabella along Wanless Road
  • Tail, 456 acres, 15 miles up Sawbill Trail north of Tofte
  • Tanner, 226 acres, 6 miles east of Isabella off Forest Road 172 and Forest Road 174 in Lake County

Fires planned for the west side of the forest include:

  • Integrator, 139 acres, near County Road 65 and Highway 73, west of Lake Leander, 14 miles northwest of Virginia
  • Fourteen, 87 acres, south of Lake Leander, Lake Fourteen and County Road 65, 10 miles northwest of Virginia
  • Jack Pine Bay, 48 acres, south of Highway 1, 10 miles southeast of Cook
  • Murphy Lake, 80 acres, near the Toimi area, 2 miles south of Murphy Lake, 4 miles east of Brimson
  • Norwegian Island, 9 acres, west end of Norwegian Bay of Lake Vermilion, north of Cook
  • Lisa and Rangeline Creek, 226 acres, along County Road 116/Echo Trail, east of Lake Jeanette, 24 miles northeast of Orr
  • Big Bull, 29 acres, south of County Road 116/Echo Trail, along Moose Loop South Forest Road 464, 28 miles northeast of Orr
  • Geraldine, 285 acres, .5 miles west of North Arm Road, east of Geraldine Lake, 7 miles northeast of Ely
  • Fenske, 136 acres, along County Road 116/Echo Trail, 6 miles north of Ely
  • Deer Ridge, 37 acres, off Mushroom Island Road and White Iron Lake, 2.5 miles southeast of Ely
  • Bear Island, 121 acres, on Bear Island Lake, 10 miles south of Ely, 1 mile east of County Road 21

Surrounding areas may be closed for several days for public safety. If you encounter smoke while driving, slow down and turn on your headlights.
