BREEZY POINT — Denise Slipy announced her candidacy for the special state Senate District 6 election and her intention to seek a DFL endorsement on Wednesday, March 26.
She filed with Crow Wing County on March 28.
Slipy is a community first responder, listing her prior roles of volunteer firefighter, corrections officer and reserve police officer on her campaign website.
In her announcement, she said she is running "to bring common sense to St. Paul."
"I will work for reform in our systems and actively seek opportunities for improvement in welfare, housing, and healthcare," states Slipy's campaign website. "I will examine our current structures and push for bipartisan bills that benefit all of us—proud Minnesotans who just want a fair chance."
Gov. Tim Walz set a special primary date of April 15, with early voting beginning April 9. The Minnesota Secretary of State recommends dropping off absentee ballots at respective counties' in-person voting locations due to the short timeline of the election.
Justin Eichorn resigned last week under pressure from both state parties and numerous individual lawmakers and the promise of a vote to expel him by the Minnesota Republican Senate Caucus. He was arrested March 17 in a law enforcement sting operation after he allegedly attempted to solicit a 17-year-old for paid sex, who turned out to be an undercover officer.
Eichorn's departure from the Senate means Republicans now have 32 members, while the DFL has 34.
