Assistant County Attorney Kelsey Hopps will replace County Attorney Don Ryan when he retires in mid-September 2025, after nearly 31 years in the office.

Jorden Borders was sentenced in Brainerd on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025. A judge found her guilty of child torture, stalking, theft by representation and attempted murder in June.

The Crow Wing County Fair continues through Aug. 3, 2025.

The county has requested that the state permit an additional 48.3 acres north and west of the current landfill, which will extend its life by roughly 15 years.

The lawsuit against the MN DOC commissioner argues the law would take away discretion from local providers to determine what’s best for the inmates and the situation.

The county will use the plan as a roadmap for guiding investments in transportation over the next 20 years or longer.

Emergency officials are still assessing damage after two tornadoes on Monday and are warning of unlicensed or uninsured contractors trying to take advantage of those needing repairs.

The first tornado began northwest of Pillager and ended after crossing Gull Lake. The second touched down north of North Long Lake near Merrifield before ending just before Ironton.

National Weather Service crews are surveying damage in the northern Brainerd lakes area following reports of a tornado. Heavy rainfall on the Iron Range caused flash flooding.

Early reports indicate most of the damage was in the Merrifield area. Tornado sightings were also reported near Casino, Lake Shore and Nisswa, which may be the same twister.
