GRAND RAPIDS — Businessman and retired veterinary practice owner Dr. John Howe announced he will run as a Republican for the seat left vacant by the resignation of ex-state Sen. Justin Eichorn.
Howe described himself as a longtime resident of Grand Rapids of more than 40 years who has served on a variety of committees and boards in his role as a veterinarian. He previously threw his hat in the ring for the newly redistricted House District 6A in 2022, although did not gain the party endorsement that year.
He said he's running for the seat because he wants to be a part of restoring values the district cherishes and put a stop to government intrusion.
"It is time for a little DOGE [Department of Government Efficiency] and WE THE PEOPLE in Minnesota," Howe's social media announcement stated. "This district has had great conservative leadership fighting government mandates, growing and strengthening our rural economies, protecting medical freedom and the unborn, and so much more."
Eichorn resigned Thursday, March 20, under pressure from both state parties and numerous individual lawmakers and the promise of a vote to expel him by the Minnesota Republican Senate Caucus. He was arrested Monday in a law enforcement sting operation after he allegedly attempted to solicit a 17-year-old for paid sex, who turned out to be an undercover officer.
Eichorn's departure from the Senate means Republicans now have 32 members, while the DFL has 34. Gov. Tim Walz is expected to soon call special election to fill the vacancy in Senate District 6. The district includes the cities of Grand Rapids, Brainerd and Baxter.
