GRAND RAPIDS — Guests at the ForestHistory Center can hear captivating stories about James E. McGrath, Stillwater’s last lumber baron, during an event Saturday, April 8.

McGrath’s grandson Bill McGrath will share entertaining and interesting tales with the audience, including how his grandfather rose to prominence as owner of the Pine City Lumber Co. in the early 20th century. Attendees will also hear personal family stories, including what became of his fortune.

During this lecture, visitors will get a glimpse into how McGrath went from sweeping sawdust to owning his own company, and why the generational wealth he accumulated did not last.

The event is 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Cost is included with regular site admission.

This event is part of the Forest History Center’s 2023 winter lecture series, which features guest speakers at the site twice monthly through April. More information is available at mnhs.org/foresthistory.
