GRAND RAPIDS — Every week, we get to talk to a member on "What's for Breakfast" on the KAXE Morning Show.
This week's caller, Tom Karges, is from Grand Rapids, but he was actually calling all the way from Florida, where he has been spending the winter.
Tom had a breakfast fitting for his location: some grits and eggs with sourdough toast and coffee. Grits is a type of porridge traditional to the southern states.
Additionally, Tom was having a honeybell orange. A honeybell orange actually isn't an orange at all. It's a hybrid of a tangerine and a grapefruit grown in Florida in the earlier parts of the year, and they're one of the juiciest types of citrus fruit, according to Tom. Due to their limited growing time, Tom won't have them for much longer, since stores will soon stop selling them.
Tom has been in Florida since November. He's planning on coming back to Grand Rapids in a few weeks. Many of the other snowbirds in Florida have already left, which Tom said has been convenient, since parking and restaurants have been emptier.
Lastly, Tom explained why he supports KAXE. He told us his father got a call from KAXE many years ago asking for a $1,000 donation, and his father thought it was gutsy enough for him to want to support the station.
"I enjoy the station, and that's why we commit our money to KAXE. I appreciate the fact there's no commercials."
