The standard began Sept. 10, 2026, following approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Aug. 11.

Minnesota nursing home workers will now earn an industry-specific minimum wage.

The wage standard went into effect Thursday, Sept. 10.

For general nursing home workers, the new minimum wage begins at $19 per hour. These workers will also receive a raise of $1.50 at the start of 2027.

Other workers with certification and training are entitled to higher minimum wages. Under the new standards, licensed practical nurses earn $27 per hour, trained medication aides earn $23.50 and certified nursing assistants earn $22.50.

According to the Nursing Home Workforce Standards Board, over three-quarters of certified nursing assistants will receive a raise under the mandate.

Kate Perushek is a member of the Board and commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. She stated in a news release the mandate fights back against years of staffing shortages and low pay.

"The wage increases ... will help nursing home workers strengthen their pay and will support worker retention across the industry, ensuring residents across Minnesota continue to receive the quality care they deserve," she said.

According to the release, the new standards are paid for through nursing home reimbursement rates.

More information about the wage standard, including holiday pay rules, is available on the Nursing Home Workforce Standards Board's website.
