Itasca County is hosting a public comment period and informational meetings on the draft of the Itasca County Outdoor Recreation Plan.
The plan outlines a framework to guide the management, enhancement and expansion of the outdoor recreation opportunities in the county from 2026-2036.
Itasca County reports that similar to statewide findings, outdoor recreation contributes significantly to the county’s economy, generating significant economic activity and supporting jobs while also promoting public health, community cohesion and tourism.
The county’s outdoor recreation system is part of a broader statewide network that includes federal, state, regional and local agencies, as well as tribal governments, nonprofit organizations and private partners.
Consistent with results from public engagement and the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, the county reports its plan builds upon four overarching strategic directions: connecting people to the outdoors, creating opportunities and protecting existing resources, taking care of existing facilities, and coordinating among partners.
The comment period opened July 10 and closes August 10.
The first informational meeting was Wednesday in Bigfork. Other meetings will be at Nashwauk American Legion Hall on Thursday, July 16 and at the Itasca County Trailhead Building on July 23. Both are at 6 p.m.
More information can be found on the Itasca County Park System website.
