A 57-year-old man from the south metro was killed after two snowmobiles collided on the Arrowhead Snowmobile Trail on Feb. 3, 2026.

Permits are needed to visit the Boundary Waters in May through September. The Superior National Forest encourages planning your backcountry trip and only reserving permits you can use.

The Eagle Mountain trail in the Superior National Forest will be closed to the public for two weeks in January 2026 for the safety of the dogs and Forest Service personnel.

The new bridge is 5 feet taller to make it more resilient to high flooding. The previous bridge was built in 1988 and closed in 2022 after severe flood damage.

The city wants the public to help inform the development of the 160-acre park, with the goal of maximizing its potential use.

The walleye population is in "excellent shape," but the winter fishery is so popular, the limit is one lower than it was for open water season.

Currently closed periods would be open for catch-and-release for largemouth and smallmouth bass, creating a continuous, year-round season.

Throughout most of 2026, the Chippewa National Forest will have contract employees out surveying people at developed and dispersed recreation sites, gathering information on how the national forest is used.

The program is designed to estimate how many people recreate on national forests and grasslands, what activities they do and how satisfied people were with their visit.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is taking feedback on experimental and special fishing regulations for Rabideau, Sand, Platte and Rainy lakes through Sept. 30, 2025.
