PRIOR LAKE — The Bemidji High School Trap team captured its first Minnesota State High School League clay target title Friday, June 26, at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.
This was the Lumberjacks' eighth-straight state tournament appearance. Kolter Braunhausen, Clayton Johnson, Jeremy Linn, Kadyn Nipp and Roman Vold combined for a team total of 487.
Proctor sophomore Laine Graves won the title in the Open Division. He shot a perfect 100, which in the past would have guaranteed him a share of the title.
But this year, rather than sharing the championship, Graves and two other students advanced to a tie-breaking bonus round, according to the MSHSL.
Proctor finished fifth in the team competition, with Austin Carlson placing eighth with a score of 99 and a reverse run of 28. Reverse run is a tiebreaker, counting the streak of targets broken in reverse, starting with the last target hit.
Other Northern Minnesotans medalists in the Open Division are Kittson County Central's Guilford Finney in fourth (99, 91) and Park Rapids' Frank Southerton in fifth (99, 66).
Graves, Finney, Southerton and Carlton were named to the All-State team.
