GRAND RAPIDS — United Way of 1000 Lakes is once again inviting the community to help shine a light on everyday champions by nominating an extraordinary individual for its Volunteer of the Year Award.
Since its launch in 2015, the Volunteer of the Year Award has recognized neighbors who lead with compassion and commitment — often behind the scenes and without expectation of recognition, the United Way stated.
Past honorees include Shannon Anttila of Great Tails Animal Rescue, Karen Tinquist of Foster Love Closet and Gwenn Smith of Grace House.
"[They] exemplify what it means to serve with heart, vision and perseverance," a news release stated. "Their dedication has not only supported individuals and families, but has also inspired others to step forward, volunteer, and care more deeply for their community."
Volunteer recognition is a vital part of United Way of 1000 Lakes’ broader commitment to cultivating a strong culture of service, the organization stated. This includes its online volunteer portal that connects people with opportunities, to the Volunteer Coordinators Network, which supports and strengthens volunteer leaders across the region.
“Our community thrives because of volunteers who give their time and talents so generously,” stated United Way Executive Director Kimberly Brink Smith. “When we take time to recognize their impact, we not only say thank you — we help elevate the value of service and inspire others to get involved.”
The Volunteer of the Year will be honored during United Way’s Community Celebration on Thursday, May 21, at Timberlake Lodge in Grand Rapids. Finalists will receive recognition during the ceremony, which also features United Way’s annual Time for Art auction — a tradition that allows attendees to bid on local artwork using volunteer hours or dollars, celebrating creativity and service side by side.
In addition, award finalists will be highlighted in a special feature article during National Volunteer Month in April. Finalists are selected by a review committee made up of United Way’s Board of Directors and Community Impact Committee.
Nonprofit organizations and community members wishing to submit a Volunteer of the Year nomination can learn more and complete a nomination form online.
Nominations must be received by 11:59 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16. Questions may be directed to United Way staff at 218-999-7570 or molly@uwlakes.org.
