Mark Smith, 66, died Thursday, May 21, 2026, after hitting a deer near Hill City in southern Itasca County while riding a dirt bike.

HILL CITY — A Warroad man died Thursday, May 21, after he struck a deer while riding a dirt bike in southern Itasca County.

Mark Russell Smith, 66, was driving north on Highway 169, roughly 5 miles north of Hill City, Thursday evening when he struck a deer in the roadway, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

He was wearing a helmet.

The Itasca County Sheriff's Office, Hill City police, Grand Rapids and Hill City fire departments and North Memorial Health ambulance and air care also responded.
