ST. PAUL — Two Northern Minnesota schools will perform at the Minnesota State High School League’s One Act Play State Festival on Friday, Feb. 6, at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.
Bagley advanced out of Section 8A for the ninth year in a row. The cast will perform The Perfect Ending at 10 a.m. Friday.
Two Harbors will perform at state for only the second time in school history. The school first advanced out of Section 7A in 2024.
The Agates will present Rue at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
Schools aren’t competing against each other at the festival. Rather, they are trying to earn a starred performance, meaning at least two of the three judges consider their performance to be of superior quality.
Bagley earned its first-ever star last year with an adaptation of the children’s book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.
In one act, schools can perform plays that are serious, funny or both. Performances are limited to 35 minutes, and the official company — cast and student support personnel — is capped at 20 students.
Teams are judged for "general effectiveness [which includes audience appeal], stage picture, blocking, characterization, stage business, pacing, interpretation, technical elements, and any other points that will help students improve their craft," according to the MSHSL.
A full spectator guide is available from the MSHSL.
