BOUNDARY WATERS — An Iowa man was rescued from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on Tuesday, Sept. 23, after cutting his leg with an ax.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said it received a report of an SOS notification from the BWCAW around 6:30 p.m.
Christopher Banfield of Davenport, Iowa, hurt his leg with an ax, and a tourniquet and bandaging were being used to stop the bleeding, a news release stated.
The St. Louis County Rescue Squad coordinated rescue and medical efforts with Zup's Fishing Resort and Canoe Outfitters on Lac La Croix, Anderson's Canoe Outfitters, Orr Ambulance Service and the Crane Lake and Virginia fire departments.
Banfield was eventually transported to the Cook Hospital.
"The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens to properly prepare themselves when entering the BWCA, like Mr. Banfield did," the release said, "and be prepared to administer first aid to those in their camping party or themselves, as emergency medical resources are not readily available."
