Get to know the volunteers behind the mic on KAXE in Beyond the Voice. This week we find out more from KAXE After Dark host and volunteer, Jerrod Hegwood.

Which shows do you DJ?

After Dark

When did you start volunteering at the station?

2025

How did you first hear about KAXE?

I had recently moved to the area, and have had a long standing interest in radio. So, I searched it out on my own.

Your favorite recent album or artist?

Favorite album of 2026, so far: Enshine - "Elevation." Favorite from 2025 was Coroner - "Dissonance Theory."

Who got you into music?

Probably getting into trouble messing with my Dad's equalizer when I was about 4. And probably growing up in the 1980s and 1990s with MTV.

Most memorable concert or festival?

Tinley Park Amphitheater in 2008. Judas Priest, Heaven & Hell (that's Black Sabbath with Dio on vox), Motorhead, and Testament.

Tell us about your favorite KAXE memory.

Have only just recently started so, most likely my first show on KAXE which was my first on radio in a few years. Felt just like old times.

Favorite fellow on-air DJ at KAXE?

I've liked everyone that I've met so far, but I will give a shout to, fellow After Darkers Cassidy and McKeon Hugh Roberts. Very cool passionate dudes to talk music with.

What hobbies do you have outside of DJing?

Collecting vinyl, heavy metal shows, hockey games, being outdoors, sweating profusely in the gym.

What's a musical ick for you?

A.I.!!!! All things A.I.! A.I. generated music, lyrics, or artwork. Not only ick, but yuck!

Prince or Dylan?

Trick question. Lemmy from Motorhead is God.

KAXE is turning 50 in 2026! Why should KAXE exist for another 50 years?

Community radio is the blood, guts, sweat, and tears of the people, for the people, by the people of that community. It's the pulse of the community. Keep KAXE healthy, and you keep the community alive.

Jay Steelwolf's 50 Songs

In honor of KAXE turning 50, we asked our volunteers to send us a playlist of 50 songs that help tell their musical story.

Jay Steelwolf hosts KAXE After Dark on Saturday nights (9pm - midnight), our late night show that offers genres outside of what you typically hear on KAXE.

Steelwolf usually focuses in on heavy metal, so here are his 50 songs to play on your preferred streaming platform!

Dan was born on the south side of Chicago and remembers dancing to Booker T and the MG's as his 1st musical memory. What followed has been a lifelong adventure of hearing new music and being exposed to the people and communities that produced the artists. Forwards in all directions!
