GRAND RAPIDS — Grand Rapids Police are asking people to avoid the trails north of West Rapids Elementary after reports of concerning coyote behavior.
Chief Andy Morgan said on Friday, July 25, the department has received multiple reports of a coyote getting too close for comfort, including an incident Thursday when a runner was nipped in the back of the leg.
“Right now we're asking the public to call in if they see unusual activity by a coyote down in this area," Morgan said. "We’re working hand in hand with the DNR to try and resolve this issue.”
When asked about theories for the reason behind the animal's behavior, Morgan said there are concerns about the coyote's health but did not elaborate further.
Police detailed other reports on social media, including one caller who said the coyote brushed up against their leg and another who said it followed them and their dogs and wouldn't leave until the caller threw rocks at it.
Officers posted notices around the trails on Friday, Morgan said. Area residents told them the coyote has been seen frequently in the past few weeks.
Police say to avoid the area, be aware of your surroundings and report any additional sightings.
