VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK — A 40-year-old Iowa man is recovering after he accidentally shot himself in the leg Thursday, Sept. 3.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the report at 6:19 a.m. at the Ash River Visitor Center on Kabetogama Lake in Voyageurs National Park.
According to a news release, the incident occurred while the man was unloading his handgun in his tent. The man was camping with friends on Namakan Lake along the U.S.-Canada border.
After the incident, his friends assisted him to the visitor's center, where they acquired enough cell service to call 911.
The man was transported by ambulance to Rainy Lake Medical Center in International Falls for treatment. The injury is not believed to be life threatening, the sheriff's office reported.
