Nine Northern Minnesota athletes twisted, leaped and tumbled their way to the Minnesota State High School League's state gymnastics meet set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22.
After winning the uneven parallel bars in the Section 8AA championship with a score of 9.275, Bemidji senior Aubrey DeWitt qualified for the all-around competition, meaning she’ll also compete on vault, balance beam and floor exercise.
Detroit Lakes, which co-ops with Frazee, will represent the Northland on the Class A side after winning sections as a team with the combined efforts of seniors Samantha Close, Maya Schlauderaff and Christina Earp; juniors Olivia Gag, Addy Laux, Shelby Lyman and Maggie Schander and sophomore Aubrey Kordosky
Laux and Schander also qualified for the all-around competition. Laux placed first in the beam, and Schander won the Section 8A all-around title, also finishing first in vault and floor.
Close, Schlauderaff and Gag will compete in the individual competition on vault. Schlauderaff will also compete on the beam.
The Class A team championships will begin at 11 a.m. Friday. The Lakers will begin on the balance beam.
The individual and all-around championships will start with Class A at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by Class 2A at 6 p.m. The first apparatus for the Northern Minnesota all-around athletes will be the bars.
