NEVIS — The only grocery store in the small city of Nevis sustained significant damage in an early morning fire on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office received the call shortly before 6 a.m. at Northwoods Grocery & Cafe. Deputies and the Nevis Fire Department responded and found the business burning.
The business and area residences were evacuated due to propane tanks and a gas station attached to the building.
Firefighters from Park Rapids, Menahga and Akeley assisted at the scene, battling the fire for several hours before it was extinguished.
In a Facebook post, Northwoods Grocery & Cafe owners John and Mary Carrier announced they intend to rebuild their business.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office and the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office.
