GONVICK — Cindy Kolling will present “Memoir vs. Memoirs — Not as Scary as They May Seem” on Wednesday, April 26, at the Gonvick Community Center.

Doors open at 9 a.m. and the program starts at 9:30 a.m. Light refreshments will be served for the Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning event.

Kolling share what a memoir actually is and what it is not. She will also discuss when to start and when to stop writing a memoir.

She will share some nuts and bolts tips to get writers going and will read some short pieces demonstrating different memoir styles.

Those working on a memoir project or who have briefly thought about writing stuff down — or those who would like to encourage someone they know to do it — are encouraged to attend. Or those just wanting a cup of coffee and a cookie while memories trigger inspiration.

Kolling lives and works near Gully, operating an artist-owned business.

Writing in a variety of styles has been part of Kolling’s writing life for as long as she can remember, according to a news release.

“As a grade school kid, I used to write mystery short stories, inspired by Nancy Drew, Trixie Beldon and July Bolton series stories. All kids do that, I think,” she stated.

Along with art, Kolling studied journalism in college, starting with print reporting/writing and evolving into a focus on broadcast journalism. Jobs in that field and others that focused on promotional writing and technical writing, along with writing for fun, have all helped hone Kolling’s different perspectives in writing skills and styles.
