Potholes aplenty after prolonged winter, but hot asphalt not available yet

BRAINERD — Thawing and freezing of this winter’s snow and rain created plentiful potholes and rough road conditions this spring in Minnesota.

A Crow Wing County Highway Department news release warned of a long to-do list for repairs as the season finally gives way to spring. Warmer weather is needed to better repair the roads, the release stated, and hot mix asphalt plants are not yet in operation. This requires highway department staff to use cold mix asphalt to patch potholes. This material can be prone to failure during wet and cold conditions, according to the county.

“We ask for the patience of the traveling public as preparations are in place to repair and maintain county roads when the weather warms up,” the news release stated. “Construction season will begin very soon, and we ask for your undivided attention when driving through work zones.”

The Crow Wing County Highway Department maintains 550 miles of county roads and 63 miles of roads in the First Assessment District and Second Assessment District, the two unorganized territories in the county.
