Professor to speak on Bemidji students killed during WWII

BAGLEY — Bemidji State University Professor Michael Herbert will present on his recent book exploring the lives of 20 Bemidji area students killed in action during World War II.

The Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning presentation will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at the American Legion Post No. 16 in Bagley. Doors for the free event open at 9 a.m.

Herbert’s presentation speaks to life as a student at the Bemidji State Teachers College and the 20 students out of many who left the college during WWII for military service and were later killed in action. In 2022, Herbert published a book titled Leaving Campus: A World War II Epitaph.

Herbert is a professor of criminal justice at Bemidji State and is currently working on a second book. The second book will examine the lives of the Bemidji women who went into military service during WWII.
