Women Leaders

Did you known that there is not an Amendment in either the MN or the U.S. Constitution that states specifically that women and men have equal protection under the law?  Polls show that 76% of our population think that we have an Equal Rights Amendment and 94% believe we should.

Betty Folliard joined us For Making Sausage on KAXE/KBXE's Morning Show along with DFL commentator Colleen Nardone.

The Women’s Leadership Fund, a non-profit and all-volunteer effort to support and accelerate the strengths and skills of women in organizational leadership positions, is now recruiting for its WELead peer advisory Cohorts that will begin in April 2020 in Brainerd/Little Falls region.  Deadline to apply is February 1st.

Each group is made of up to 10 women leaders who meet monthly and support and advise on each other’s personal and professional goals.

Last Friday KAXE/KBXE News Director Heidi Holtan and Strong Women contributor and facilitator Laura Connelly visited with the folks at Almanac North Dennis Anderson and Julie Zenner.  We've got more Strong Women focus groups coming up in Brainerd and Grand Rapids and stay tuned for a Strong Women: Grandmothers Storytelling event as well!

Today we heard a conversation about many conversations between women invited to participate in our Strong Women segment.  These are the ideas we began with:

What are our cultural assumptions about women’s relationship with power, influence and authority and how does this show up in the way we talk?

The position women are placed in the socially defined hierarchy of power impacts and affects all aspects of our lives, our thoughts, our passions, the way we conduct ourselves, the way we talk and also the conduct of others towards us.

I had the chance to talk with author Brad Meltzer before the launch of his two newest books in the I Am series - this time I Am Marie Curie and I Am Walt Disney.

He is telling the stories of ordinary people who have changed the world.  Leaders who had lives like ours - with ups and downs, failures and successes and perseverence.  Leaders who were humble.

We've been holding Strong Women focus groups at KAXE/KBXE in the last year, talking with women in rural northern MN about their lives and experienced.

This time when we gathered we talked about women supporting other women.  Laura Connelly led this focus group and in this conversation she talks about themes that surfaced and what they mean.

Our Strong Women conversations will continue on the radio, and soon, podcast only conversations as well!  Stay tuned!

Shannon Fitch is not only KAXE/KBXE's Volunteer of the Year, she is a licensed independent daycare provider.  She gave us an up close and personal view on what it means to run her own business, and to care for the next generation.
