"What's for Breakfast" guests Kathy Lee and Kathy Kooda from Grand Rapids have been delivering donations to families in need in the Twin Cities due to the impact of Operation Metro Surge.

HIGHWAY 2 NEAR FLOODWOOD — Last week on What's for Breakfast, we got a snapshot of a car full of donated items, travel mugs of coffee and women named Kathy.

The KAXE Morning Show conversation featured Kathy Kooda and Kathy Lee, both of Grand Rapids.

Lee and Kooda have been collecting food and hygiene items from the Grand Rapids community to bring to the Twin Cities. Their goal is to assist those who do not feel safe leaving their homes to shop for themselves due to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis and surrounding communities.

"Hygiene needs, basic stuff that we take for granted — that we can just run to the store and buy, and we're not going to get pulled over," Kooda said. "The need is huge."

Items collected by Grand Rapids residents Kathy Kooda and Kathy Lee are ready for transport to Twin Cities residents who felt unable to leave their homes because of the presence of federal immigration agents during Operation Metro Surge in February 2026.

Their delivery was brought to a church within School District 622, which serves the communities of North St. Paul, Maplewood and Oakdale. The school's counselors will take items to families they know need assistance.

"It's real grassroots. ... It's just community helping community, neighbor to neighbor, really," Lee said.

The pair delivered items to the metro a few weeks earlier and saw the need to continue gathering community donations.

"If you get a lot of people doing a little, that amount is an awful lot," Kooda said.
