GRAND RAPIDS — Some weeks, we hear about elaborate breakfasts or a simple bowl of oatmeal. Other weeks, our What's for Breakfast guests on the KAXE Morning Show don't have anything to eat.
This week's caller, Edythe Michel, spends summers on Sherry's Arm of Pokegama Lake and winters in Austin, Texas. When she called in, she was about to have a cup of strong, black coffee. "I just got in that habit years ago when the kids were little."
She prefers fair trade coffee and dark French roasts. She said, "I don't want any wimpy, you know, amaretto flavored coffee or anything!"
Though coffee is almost always on the menu on What's For Breakfast, Edythe's morning ritual was not the ordinary. She has been practicing intermittent fasting for about 10 years. This means 12-16 hours without eating, as well as a plant-based diet unlike her husband, Booka. If Edythe cooks, he will eat some of it, but otherwise, they stick to their own diets.
Both Edythe and Booka are longtime members and supporters and are looking forward to another great Grand Rapids Riverfest this Saturday, Sept. 6.
"I just love how you have added more and more food trucks that have the kind of food that I can eat," Edythe said.
Edythe had a way with words and John and Heidi both noted some of her phrases, while not quite appropriate for air, could be excellent T-shirts, like: "No cow tit secretion," "nut cheese John!" and "You gotta fight fascism however you can!"
What's on the breakfast menu
