ROCHESTER — Most people settle for a standard breakfast. Susanne Derby, however, prefers to spice up her breakfast with something unique.
We got to chat with Susanne on "What's For Breakfast" on the KAXE Morning Show recently.
For breakfast, Susanne enjoyed a lot of the usual breakfast fare: coffee, yogurt and oranges. Instead of cereal, though, Susanne had a bowl of madras mix, which is a mix of chickpeas and various grains.
Madras mix originates from east India. Susanne described it as "salty instead of sweet" and "better than Cheerios." She first discovered madras mix when she was at a restaurant in eastern Africa. Since then, she's been getting it from a local Indian grocery store. She mixes it with sour yogurt and she planned to eat a Cara Cara orange as well.
Susanne is a self-proclaimed coffee hoarder. She likes to get a number of different types of coffee, including some from the Indian store.
Susanne was calling from Rochester because she takes care of her dad five days a week there. She said she's enjoyed the calmer culture there compared to living in bigger cities, but really enjoys the time she spends on her land in Aitkin County when she can.
Her plans for the day included cooking for her dad, going to her book club to talk about This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger, and going for some warm-water swimming later on.
What's on the breakfast menu
