DEER RIVER — Even with a tight schedule, Lily Benge-Briggs manages to make her mornings work.
We got to speak with Lily on "What's For Breakfast" on the KAXE Morning Show recently.

For breakfast, she's having what her family calls a "Thunder Bun." Similar to a pasty, a thunder bun is a piece of bread dough stuffed with various ingredients, including hamburger, vegetables and sauces.
Lily often prepares a batch of Thunder Buns beforehand so she can get out the door quickly for school. She microwaves a thunder bun, takes it with her, and eats it while she's driving.
Lily told us she usually sets her alarm for 6:57 a.m., and she's out the door by 7:08 a.m. Her drive from rural Taconite to Deer River is a little long, so she leaves early to get to school by 8 a.m. for her morning class.
Lily also spoke about some of the art classes she teaches including ceramics, printmaking, drawing and painting. It's her second year teaching at Deer River, and she's enjoyed the work from her students so far.
Lily decided to call in for "What's for Breakfast" this week because she had some time to spare. She usually listens to KAXE every morning when she drives to school, but she doesn't often have enough time in the morning to join us. On this particular morning, the students had the day off due to the end of the third quarter, so she decided to give us a call while driving in.
What's on the breakfast menu
A Thunder Bun — a piece of baked bread dough stuffed with fried hamburger, onions, carrots, mushrooms, cabbage, hot sauce, vinegar and a touch of garlic, which is similar to a pasty.
Lily also has coffee while in the car.
