Scott Dahlquist talked about his dogs on "What's for Breakfast" on Feb. 21, 2025.

Every Friday morning, we get to know one of our members on "What's for Breakfast." Recently, we spoke with Scott Dahlquist, a dog sledding enthusiast from Balkan Township.

CHISHOLM — For many, a top priority every morning is getting breakfast right away. For Scott Dahlquist, however, that priority goes to his dogs.

Scott was our guest on What's for Breakfast on the KAXE Morning Show recently.

Scott had not yet had breakfast when he joined us, so he told us about what his dogs had for breakfast instead. Scott owns 18 dogs he trains for dogsledding. Not every dog eats the same, though. Some of the dogs get a raw chicken leg, some get a little kibble, and one dog, Luigi, has had an upset stomach, so Scott has been giving him a unique mixture of beaver and beef.

Scott clarified that giving his dogs that kind of food is good for them, since the dogs are, as Scott put it, "a little bit more primitive than your average lap animal." Scott's dogs were trained for outside work, and their diets are made to match.

Scott listed the names of the dogs: Quaker, Frito, Beetle, Snickers, Frieda, Luigi, Polar, Bjorn, Wisdom, Chip, Peter, Jolie Rouge and Max. The names of a few of his dogs escaped Scott while live on the air.

As for Scott's breakfast plans, he told us he was cooking some bacon and eggs. The eggs were from Scott's chickens, which recently started laying again.

Scott also spoke about his job at Mesabi Recreation, an outdoors store in Virginia that specializes in gear such as cross-country skis, snowshoes, dog-powered sports equipment and bikes in the summer.

Scott also let us know that Mesabi Recreation recently opened a new trail on the Virginia public golf course. It's 5 kilometers in length and called the Winter For All trail. It's open to all kinds of winter activities, including snowshoeing, fat tire biking and cross-country skiing. The trail is also open to dogs and dog-powered sports.

"We want to invite everybody out to use the trail, with all those different facets, and its free."
