PARK RAPIDS — 2024 was a tough year for cross-country skiers in northern Minnesota, but the good news is area trails are ready to go.
There are so many options for skiing throughout our region, and one dedicated group in Park Rapids has been working for decades to maintain and improve local trails. Britta Sailer is president of the Itascatur Outdoor Activity Club and recently joined the KAXE Morning Show to talk about the region's ski scene and the efforts behind keeping trails accessible and enjoyable for all.
The Itascatur Outdoor Activity Club oversees a 10-kilometer trail system, offering a mix of beginner-friendly loops and more advanced trails.
"We wanted to have a trail close to us," Sailer explained. "I know they have great trails at Bemidji, but I don't have all day, or if you have an hour after work or something. We wanted to have something local."
The trails, groomed for both classic and skate skiing, welcome everyone from casual skiers to high school teams looking for a reliable training space.
"We have a couple of nice little hills, not monster hills, but there's a few," Sailer said.
The club also recently improved an area to help beginners build confidence on small hills without worrying about obstacles.
Itascatur Outdoor Activity Club also maintains a snowshoe trail and offers loaner gear during open houses on Sundays during the winter, in addition to non-winter activities like biking trails and summer events.
So many volunteers all across the region help maintain cross-country ski, bike and other recreational trails. Sailer emphasized the critical role of the Great Minnesota Ski Pass. The passes help fund the equipment needed to keep trails in good condition to improve access and safety.
