A new event in Deer River combines creative cardboard sleds with raising funds to return toddler care to the area.

DEER RIVER — Itasca Area Schools Collaborative and the Deer River Chamber of Commerce are teaming up for the first-ever Cardboard Classic on Friday, Feb. 7 in Deer River. Registration begins at 3:45 p.m. and sledding starts at 4:15 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser to bring toddler care back to the Deer River area.

Darla Rahne with Early Edge and Nikki Osse from the Deer River Chamber of Commerce were recent guests on the “Bright Spot” on the KAXE Morning Show. Early Edge serves children and families in the Itasca Area Schools Collaborative region. The new program was formerly known as Invest Early, and it will continue providing early learning experiences to prepare area children for future educational success, according to leaders.

“The Deer River community has really come together with the chamber and wanting to really address this problem, because they know that child care is important in having a vibrant community and both for businesses and for families," Rahne said. "If they can't find affordable child care, people aren't going to live and move to the community and stay there.”

The Deer River sliding hill is located off Chase Lake road, north of town.

It is time to start building cardboard sleds. Participants are allowed to use tape or glue to construct the sleds and painting and decorating is optional. Prizes will be awarded for fastest sled, best-dressed sled, and most spirited team.

The registration fee is $25 per sled. Find more information and register at earlyedgemn.org. Any donations toward the cause are also welcome.
