Events Up North Dec. 9-15: Classic movies, holiday festivals, Christmas play

Snowshoeing can be a great way to stay active during winter.

Events this week include a book release party in Brainerd, an MS support group in Grand Rapids, contra dance in Bemidji and theater auditions in Pequot Lakes and Grand Rapids.

It's another busy week in Northern Minnesota. Here are some events to check out:

Monday, Dec. 9

  • Grand Rapids Players' auditions for Murder on the Orient Express - 6-8:30 p.m. at the Ives Studio Theater in the Reif Center

Tuesday, Dec. 10

  • Northern Lights Nordic Ski Club's annual ski swap - 4-6 p.m. at Ardent Bicycles in Grand Rapids
  • Book release party for Bailey's Big Spirit - 4-6 p.m. at the Brainerd Public Library
  • Grand Rapids Players' auditions for Murder on the Orient Express - 6-8:30 p.m. at the Ives Studio Theater in the Reif Center
  • Classic Movie Series - 6:30 p.m. at Paulucci Space Theater in Hibbing. Showing Christmas in Connecticut. Conversation follows.
  • Minnesota Women in Conservation Learning Circle - 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Sampaguita in Aitkin

  • MS support group - 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at IM Hotel in Grand Rapids
  • Stage North Theater Company presents The Best Christmas Pageant Ever - 7 p.m. at Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd
  • Yuletide Festival - 3-7 p.m. at Hibbing Public Library
  • Chisholm Kiwanis present Holly Jolly Holiday - 4-7 p.m. at Minnesota Discovery Center
  • Classic Movie Series - 6:30 p.m. at the Edge Center for the Arts in Bigfork. This month's film is Three Godfathers.
  • Choralaires Christmas concert - 7 p.m. at Hibbing High School Auditorium. A free-will offering will be taken to support the inclusive playground project at Lincoln Elementary.
  • Mesabi Community Band concert - 7 p.m. at Eveleth City Auditorium

Friday, Dec. 13

Saturday, Dec. 14

  • Bemidji Senior Center's Christmas Extravaganza - 8 a.m. to noon at the senior center in downtown Bemidji. Includes a pancake breakfast, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, gift wrapping and the Senior Creations gift shop.
  • Stage North Theater Company presents The Best Christmas Pageant Ever - 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd
  • Bemidji Contra Dance - 5:30 p.m. potluck dinner, dancing at 6:30 p.m. at Rail River Folk School. No partners or experience necessary. Live music by Leatherwood.
  • Full-moon snowshoe hike - 7:30 p.m. at Northland Arboretum in Brainerd. Bring snowshoes or winter boots and plan to hike for an hour. Registration required. $10 for Northland Arboretum members, $20 for non-members.

Sunday, Dec. 15

  • Stage North Theater Company presents The Best Christmas Pageant Ever - 2 p.m. at Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd
  • Stay Human Storytelling - 2 p.m. at Klockow Brewing in Grand Rapids. Stories about endings and the end of the year from some of the storytellers you've heard on KAXE's program "Stay Human." There will be an open mic, too.
  • DNR Snowshoe Hike - 3 p.m. at the Lost 40 SNA, northeast of Alvwood
