Jazz Salutes Its Disc Jockeys
The advent of bebop added a fresh sound to American music. It also added new voices to some metropolitan radio stations: the late-night jazz DJs who specialized in presenting this new music to their fellow hipster nightflies. Appreciative musicians often wrote them tributes like these.

The Fugs: At The Forefront Of The Counterculture
Led by poets Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, the garage-rock band The Fugs became a pivotal player in the American underground of the mid- to late '60s. The group retired in 1969 but re-formed in the mid-'80s and has performed and recorded regularly ever since. The band is set to release what could be its last album.

A proposed road in Alaska is pitting residents against environmentalists. The people who live in a remote village want better access to an airport with year-round flights to Anchorage for medical emergencies. But the road would cut through a wilderness area, which environmentalists say would set a bad precedent.
