Morning sun and fall colors brighten the day in McGregor on Sept. 17, 2025.

During the Phenology Report for the week of Sept. 23, Staff Phenologist John Latimer covers falling leaves, migrating grosbeaks, and vibrant wildflowers.

September may be coming to a close, but John Latimer – KAXE's staff phenologist – is still finding plenty of wildflowers. On his list for this week were the flat-topped aster, red clover, white campion, silvery cinquefoil, tansy, purple-stemmed asters and hoary alyssum. Get out and gather a wild bouquet while you can!

John began the phenology report with a tribute to a longtime phenologist and good friend, Ed Dallas, who passed away recently. Ed was a frequent contributor to the phenology show. He will be missed.

You can send a note to Ed’s wife, Julie Dallas, at this address;

Charlie Mitchell (she/they) joined KAXE in February of 2022. Charlie creates the Season Watch Newsletter, produces the Phenology Talkbacks show, coordinates the Phenology in the Classroom program, and writes nature-related stories for KAXE's website. Essentailly, Charlie is John Latimer's faithful sidekick and makes sure all of KAXE's nature/phenology programs find a second life online and in podcast form.

With a background in ecology and evolutionary biology, Charlie enjoys learning a little bit about everything, whether it's plants, mushrooms, or the star-nosed mole. (Fun fact: Moles store fat in their tails, so they don't outgrow their tunnels every time conditions are good.)
