91.7 KAXE/90.5 KBXE Morning Show

Monday - Friday 5am - 9am

A mix of National Public Radio's Morning Edition and local features including Arts, Nature, Sports, Weather and More!

Every Friday morning  on What's for Breakfast we pull up a chair to one of our member's kitchen tables (or hotel rooms) and get to know them a little bit better.  This week we talked with Robin Phillips who was visiting Grand Rapids from St. Louis Park.  Robin is the executive director of Advocates for Human Rights in Mpls and was in town to talk with the Blandin Foundation and enjoy a first Friday arts event in northern MN.

Area Voices tells the arts, culture and history stories of northern Minnesota.  Northern Community  Radio on-air volunteer Dan Gannon had the privilege of talking with three area youth who have traveled to North Dakota and taken part in the Standing Rock protests of the Dakota Access Pipeline.   Listen as they share why they went, what it was like, and the impact this movement is having on their generation.

Tuesday mornings are special around Northern Community Radio... Tuesdays, we take a closer look at the natural world we live in.   John Latimer has spent 33 documenting the phenological changes he notices each day.  Tuesday mornings we hear John's weekly report.  We also hear from students and regular people across our listening area as they share the subtle and not so subtle seasonal changes they are witnessing.  We would love to hear what you are noticing!

What's For Breakfast? is a favorite feature of the Friday Morning Show.  This morning Heidi and John spoke with 12 year old Evelyn from Bemidji.  Evelyn shared a story of lending a helping hand after she saw an actual hand sticking out from behind a car yesterday.  Her tale is a reminder to all of us to stop and help when we see others in trouble.  Thanks Evelyn for sharing your story and your morning with us!

Tuesday mornings are special around here. We hear phenology from students and listeners from all across northern MN.  We also get the special treat of the weekly phenology report from our favorite nature reporter John Latimer.  For 33 years John Latimer has been documenting the subtle and not so subtle changes in the environment on The Phenology Show.

There are several students in the KAXE/KBXE listening area participating in the Girls Swim & Dive Championships at the U of M Aquatics Center this week.

Dive events took place Wednesday afternoon (11/16/16) with Amanda Hernesman of Grand Rapids, Nyah Adams and Anikka Mattonen of Hibbing and Alyssa Mathis of International Falls all competing in the 1 meter dive event.

What was once used on battle fields is now making its way to red carpets and fashion magazines as well.  In this segment of Area Voices, host Katie Carter sits down with chain maille artist John Theroux.
