On Saturday April 23rd, KAXE is co-sponsoring the Iron Range Earth Fest in Mt. Iron, MN. This annual event connects people from all over around topics related to sustainability, the future of northern MN, and appreciation of the environment. There are a number of sustainability-related speakers at this year's fest, and one of the featured speakers is Dr. Roopali Phadke, a professor of Environmental Studies at Macalester College in St. Paul. At the event, Dr. Phadke will give the Saturday featured presentation titled "Recycling Precious Metals From e-Waste". Dr. Phadke chatted with News Director Heidi Holtan and Senior Correspondent Scott Hall to discuss the problems with e-Waste and the promise of reimagining how we reuse it.
Dr. Phadke specializes in citizen science and community-based research methodologies, so the interview conversation is accessible to everyone. Dr Phadke is a skilled communicator and can explain complex and scientific concepts in a way that will make sense to a general listener. Along with learning about e-Waste at the Earth Fest, participants may also bring any e-Waste they may have laying around in their "drawer of shame" to be recycled.
Also on Saturday, KAXE/KBXEstaff phenologist, John Latimer will lead a phenology walk starting at 12:30pm at the Merritt Elementary School entrance. The concluding presentation of the day on Saturday, April 23rd will be given by Robert Blake of Solar Bear, whose presentation is titled "Native Nations Leading the Way in Renewable Energy."
