Celebrating 2020 Graduates: Northland Remer Valedictorian/Native Leader Logan Monroe

2020 is an extraordinary year, especially for local high school seniors.  They are experiencing something no one has gone through before:  celebrating and honoring their education in a world of social distancing.  Do you know a graduating senior?  We'd love to talk with them!  Email us.

Logan Monroe is no ordinary student.  He's the 1st Native American valedictorian at Northland Remer Schools and was just listed by UNITY as 25 Native Leaders under 25.  He was recently featured on Fox 9 Shine On with the Northland Eagles Drum Group.  Logan talked with us this morning about his experiences in school and his connection to his community and his family as he looks forward.

Other clubs and extracurricular activities for Logan Monroe:

Ojibwe Quiz Bowl, which is a competition in the knowledge of the Ojibwe language, history and culture. Logan has held the title of the youngest competitive player in the Ojibwe quiz bowl as he started competing when he was 9 years old. The competitions are held throughout the state of Minnesota in Tribal, charter, and public schools. In Logan’s years of competing he remains one of the top competitors in the state. Logan’s desire to learn more about his language, heritage and culture is very strong within his life, in 2017 Logan and his family made a trip through the Ojibwe Migration stopping places from Minnesota to the Atlantic Ocean. Leaving Anishinaabe offerings at each stopping place. Logan is the captain of Northland Community Schools State Champion team.

Native American Ojibwe Drum Group

Logan loves to sing on both the hand drum and big drum. He has won competitions all over MN in both school sponsored and public events. He has also written many of his own hand drum and big drum songs as well. He is the lead singer of the school’s Northland Eagles Drum Group.
