Attorney General Keith Ellison will not make a run for governor of Minnesota.
He will instead continue to campaign for reelection as the state’s top prosecutor, according to a Tuesday, Jan. 20, news release.
“With my friend Tim [Walz] deciding not to run for reelection, many have asked if I would consider running for that office,” he stated.
“And I have. But as the federal government declares war on Minnesota, it is clear to me that I am best equipped to defend Minnesotans from the Office of the Attorney General.”
Ellison was first elected to the seat in 2018. Over his tenure, his office litigated suits that lowered the price of insulin, helped patients with medical debt, fought price gouging and protected tenants and workers from exploitation.
“Minnesota is in an unprecedented moment. The President of the United States is tearing apart families and terrorizing our communities,” Ellison stated. “Defending our state as Attorney General is the most important thing I have done in my career.”
Ellison initially made his reelection campaign announcement in October.
Attorney and military veteran Ron Schutz announced he would run as a Republican, also in October.
