The man was reportedly paddleboarding with his juvenile daughter Sept. 1, 2026, when he fell into the lake and became unresponsive.

EVELETH — A 43-year-old man is dead following an apparent drowning Tuesday, Sept. 1.

In a news release, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies responded around 7 p.m. Tuesday to a possible drowning on Ely Lake, about 5 miles south of Eveleth.

The man was paddleboarding with his juvenile daughter on the lake when he fell in and became unresponsive.

His daughter pulled him toward the shore, where residents helped pull him on shore and began CPR.

“Despite the efforts of family, friends and emergency responders, the male was pronounced dead at the scene,” the release stated. An autopsy is pending with the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.

Neither the man nor his daughter wore lifejackets at the time of the incident.

The identity of the man was not released as of Wednesday afternoon, pending notification of family.
