WALKER — A man is dead and a Cass County sheriff's deputy was hospitalized after the two parties exchanged gunfire near Walker on Sunday, Nov. 16.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation into the incident. Body cameras were worn and active, and the deputies involved have been placed on critical incident leave, according to the release, which is standard procedure.
A 911 caller reported hearing shooting near residences around Old Agency Trail and Onigum Road NW, about 4 miles northeast of Walker, according to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies investigated the area and attempted to contact a man walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road NW.
The man fled, and a foot pursuit ensued.
The release states there was an "exchange of gun fire." The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a deputy who was shot was flown via helicopter to a Fargo hospital for further treatment.
This is the third law enforcement shooting in the region in the last few months. Last week, a Clearwater County deputy shot and killed a man in Bagley. A Walker police officer shot a knife-wielding man in a Dollar General in August.
