The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will investigate the Nov. 13, 2025, incident. The names of the victim and law enforcement involved have not been released.

BAGLEY — A Clearwater County deputy shot and killed a man Thursday, Nov. 13, following a car chase in Bagley.

The events leading up to the incident began just after noon Thursday, when a sheriff’s deputy recognized a man with a felony warrant for his arrest at the Bagley Cenex gas station.

The deputy approached the man to take him into custody and a “physical altercation” occurred, according to a news release from the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was able to get into his vehicle and flee the scene. He drove east on Highway 2 with the deputy in pursuit, later accompanied by other deputies and Bagley police officers.

Law enforcement attempted to stop the man, who at times drove into the westbound lanes.

The man drove his vehicle through a yard and north onto McDougal Avenue Northwest, less than a quarter-mile east of the Cenex, according to the news release. Law enforcement stopped the vehicle after the man drove into another yard.

While law enforcement attempted to get the man out of the vehicle, he fired a “flare type projectile” at the officers and deputies, the release stated.

A deputy shot the man, who died on scene despite life-saving measures performed with the assistance of the Sanford Health Bagley Ambulance service.

One deputy suffered a minor injury.

Law enforcement has not released the names of those involved as of Friday morning. Body cameras were worn and active during the incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was called in to investigate.
