A 70-year-old Colorado resident was rescued from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness after sending out a distress call for a possible broken leg.

ELY — The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Rescue Squad and other first responders are being credited with the successful rescue of a 70-year-old Colorado resident from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The St. Louis County dispatch center received a distress signal from a Garmin safety device around 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. They were able to pinpoint the injured party’s location west of Contest Lake near the Stuart River portage. Garmin was also able to inform dispatch that the injured party had possibly broken their leg.

With the assistance of a Lifelink III Helicopter, responders from the rescue squad, Morse Township Fire Department and Minnesota State Patrol were able to get to the injured party and remove them from the wilderness.

The injured person is a Fort Collins, Colorado, resident and was transported to Duluth for treatment.
