It’s common to encounter supply shortages during severe weather or other disasters, and Crow Wing County is seeking to educate residents on what to include in a basic emergency kit.
September is National Preparedness Month. In a news release, the Crow Wing County Emergency Management office encourages everyone to have meaningful conversations about what to do when disaster strikes — talking with loved ones, neighbors and children, and practicing evacuation and escape plans.
This year, Crow Wing County Public Health teamed up with local businesses to promote awareness and guide residents on emergency kits. Creating and maintaining an emergency kit can help you survive the crucial first days following a disaster — until electricity is restored or rescue teams can reach your location.
"Some basic items — from milk and eggs to toilet paper — become scarce as people panic and demand skyrockets," the release stated. "Preparing gradually can make building an emergency kit more affordable, while also helping stores maintain enough stock to meet community needs."
Participating in this campaign are the Brainerd Public Library, Hallett Memorial Library in Crosby, Crosslake Area Library, and Ace Hardware stores in Brainerd, Nisswa and Crosby. While browsing the shelves at these stores, you’ll find green tags on items recommended for an emergency kit. Green emergency kit checklists are also available near the front of each store.
Public health employees will host a table to answer questions and share more information at each of the libraries.
- Hallett Memorial Library, Crosby: 9-11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11
- Brainerd Public Library: 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16
- Crosslake Area Library: 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30
