BEMIDJI — Work on three northwest Minnesota highways began Monday, Aug. 4.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation said the one-month paving preservation project will impact Highway 1 from the Red Lake Reservation line to Highway 72 (Busy Corner), Highway 71 from Blackduck to Big Falls and Highway 72 from the Beltrami County line to Lake of the Woods County Road 1.
The work won't require any detours, but the agency said to expect lane closures, delays and turn-lane restrictions.
Work is expected to wrap up in late August, but construction activities are weather-dependent.
MnDOT reminds motorists in work zones:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate through with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. Fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

And: New MN law enacts guardrails for kids on social media; and Rock Ridge will compete in the boys state tennis tournament, as well as athletes from Cloquet, Thief River Falls and Crookston.

Recreators will be able to buy licenses and validate harvests in a new licensing app. You'll still be able to make purchases in person and carry paper copies, if you prefer.

The Wolverines also have five students competing in the individual tournament, with other Northland entries from Cloquet, Thief River Falls and Crookston.
